Born in a coastal town in '58 (when black and white TV was up to date). Ever since her birth Anglica has functioned as a contact forum for the English students in the University of Turku. Anglica has around 130 members at the moment and functions actively throughout the year (well, of course not the summer, no-one works at the Uni in the summer), so it is fair to say that she has her hand in pretty much everything that happens on and around the University hill.
Representatives of Anglica meet on regularly irregular intervals with the full professor of the department. Anglica's goal is to keep the staff informed on the student's views about the studies, and if any problems should arise, correct them.
Anglica also functions as a middle step between a student and the Student Union (TYY). So if TYY seems to be the thing that it actually is -- a scary place with armies of frightening people -- come see a friendly board member who'll guide you through the jungle of different kinds of secretaries and representatives to your goal (whatever may it be).
One of Anglica's yearly tasks is to provide the department a new stock of enthusiastic Tutors to guide the freshmen through the hell and high waters of the first months.
Anglica also tries to inform the membrains about all other kinds of studies-related stuff (how to get to be an exchange student if you want out get the hell out of here, etc.)
Parté. Party. Bileet. Whatever. Let's face it, the parties are what makes the student life worthwhile. And since Anglica is officially in the 'worthwhiling business' she tries to get the people to boogie as oft as possible. The 'traditionals' are: Turku Survival (breaking in the newbies), Halloween, Lil' Christmas, Laskiainen and the Grande Finale of the year (Pre-)Vappu.
More official-like are the events when the Anglicans put on some (more or) less revealing clothing, and try to act like civilized people. These rare occasions are called 'Thanksgiving' and 'Vuosijuhlat.'
Some desperate stabs at doing something new are taken every year, depending on what hellish schemes the dysfunctional brains of the actives of the moment come up with. A poetry nite has been tried, to a moderate success. (The Simpsons jamboree will not be mentioned here.)
Every now and then Anglica tries to organize an Excu. There was a time when these attempts were actually taken seriously by the people involved, but as of late they have been more or less to pay homage to a former chairperson (who shall remain nameless). Usually Anglicans have sent a group of intoxicated representatives to both Hämeenkadun Appro and Goom. National Meeting of English Students, where the English Students meet...erm...nationally travels from town to town, and if the location of the goings on is not too far away, a group of Anglicans has usually been present. See, Anglicans are not as antisocial as you think!
During the semester the sports section has a quite regular schedule. Last year futsal and floorball were played, and a to-be-tradition of a newbies vs oldies football for autumn semester was established. During the summers the activity level is pretty low, but something still happens occasionally. Timetables are announced when the semester starts and someone active decides to arrange something. On rare occasions something else sports-related happens, for example curling (see picture on the right) and ice hockey with cleaning equipment (challenge match versus Skandica in spring '07, which we won - bwahahaha).
For the average (normal, if the term may be stretched here) Anglican the only form of sports is of course the Beer & Bowling club. It meets whenever at Aninkaisten or Kupittaan keilahalli, and after the strenuous bowling part, cooling beverages will be consumed at Proffa.
Anglicans hang in and around Juslenia.
Anglicans are known to be loud.
The easiest way to communicate with an Anglican is in Finglish.
Anglica's closet has been organized in the spring of 2002 (probably for the first time since the Bay of Pigs).
